	More humane than wire trap

I agree with the design points made by Mark Hostetter, and would like to underscore that there are more do-it-yourself elements than suggested in the advertising. However, this is more humane than a wire trap, any smell is contained, and I could transport the trapped animal in the back of my Prius with no adverse smell or damage. The carrying handle is near the opening, and this means you can carry the trap level with one hand on the handle and the other on the lip at the closed end of the trap. I saw on Mouse-Trap Monday YouTube to put a contractor bag over the whole trap before moving it, and so you can transport in your car and contain any skunk smell should they spray. There is a wire tab where you can tie string, and then when you reach to free the door mechanism, you pull back on the string to open the door while you are behind the trap and walking backwards -- use 5 + of string. Mouse-Trap Monday guy also showed to tip up the end of the trap and put some wood under, to encourage the animal to move towards the opening. If you are manually tipping up the end of the trap, hold contractor bag in front of you. If animal is in the trap for hours, it wont get wet, it wont claw the ground, the sides are too slippery for claw grip. Also, because it isnt a wire mesh trap, there is no possibility of reaching in and getting the bait without getting trapped. We used kippered herring to catch skunk, and kippered herring was the dominant smell. The skunk was well fed and then possibly too car-sick to feel alarmed. It waddled off.

	poor design and a store credit, not a refund

The trap is poorly designed. The concept is great because the animal wont hurt itself trying to chew thru the wire like other traps and it cant see out besides a few holes in the trap door. To lift the cage, the handle is at the opening end, so when you lift it the animal slides to the bottom and might become agitated. A simple release mechanism is not there, to release the animal it is how you set the trap and there is no hook to hold the door open. Also if the door is opened and the animal hits the trigger when exiting the trap will close, trapping the animal again. Very poor design! Also when I contacted The Snare Shop they told me I would have to pay the shipping back, which is fine with me, but I would have a store credit. Sorry but I did not see that when ordering. I may send one back and let the credit card company deal with them. I might keep one and redesigning a few items to make it work like it should have from the start. I would have given it a one star but like the concept of the trap.

I borrowed two of these from a neighbor and caught 3 racoons and an opossum in 2 nights. Then I bought my own. There might be an issue with residual smell. Be sure to wash it good after a kill.
